Therapy for Adolescents

As adolescents make the transition from childhood to adulthood, they are faced with an astounding assortment of challenges.  Adolescents benefit from a counselor who can understand the dynamics of their world and empower them to identify and understand their emotions, build confidence and maturity, and improve problem solving skills so they may better manage the challenges they face.

Parents seek therapy for their children for reasons including:

  • Fear, worry and anxiety
  • Sadness, hopelessness, depression
  • Irritability and anger
  • Coping with a chronic illness
  • Lack of motivation in school
  • Rule breaking, defiance and acting out
  • Poor peer and/or family relationships
  • Adjusting to life changes (move, divorce, etc.)
  • Grief and loss
  • Drug and/or alcohol use
  • Self harm and/or suicidal thoughts

What to Expect

Therapy for adolescents works best when a parent, family member, or caretaker is actively involved in the treatment process.  The first appointment is a parent intake appointment for me to meet with one, or both, parents.  This time is used is for me to learn about your child, your family, therapeutic concerns, goals, and any interventions that may have been attempted.  Based on that information, I will explain to you a treatment plan that would involve both you and your teen, recommendations for home, and for frequency of therapy.  When appropriate, I prefer to include older teens (ages 16 and up) in this initial intake appointment.  If you and your teen are comfortable speaking freely together regarding the topics mentioned above, then please include your teen in the initial appointment.
